Peace Meeting - in the Mission

A Peace Meeting was held last night at the Mission Recreation Center on Treat Street. Mission Community Council held a meeting last night to help deal with the violence that has been happening in the Mission.
Police Chief Heather Fong, District Captain Stephen Tacchini, Public Defender Jeff Addachi, Supervisor Tom Ammiano, Margaret Brodkin, Dillard Smith from the Mayor's Office were all there and spoke. Captain Tacchini gave out his personal phone number to call if someone wanted to talk, explain a problem, etc - 415-558-5444. Call emergencies to 911 and call 575-4444 which is a anonymous tip line which is staffed 24 hours a day - no questions asked.
A number of community based organizations spoke about the need for resources - funding for jobs, job training, keeping schools open later, safe parks, more funding and more stuff for kids to do.
The Police Department is increasing staff and beats. Community organizers cautioned how increase police staff is used - suggesting that new patrols go to where the violence is happening, not on the main drag near popular spots. (although the police will tell you that people are drawn to these popular sports).
Supervisor Tom Ammiano has called for a hearing to ask for supplemental money to help with resources for increase protection.
The room was full, tons of media. At one point people were asked to stand up if they had been a victim of violence in the Mission, an amazing amount of people stood up. Everyone was in one room - everyone has to work together - we are watching.
The Mission Community Council is going to keep track of information from this meeting and meetings will be held in the future (every 30 days). To keep track of information (website is an excellent resource) go to www.miccosf.org
