District Three Forum - Francisco Middle School

District Three Candidates' Forum was held at Francisco Middle School Auditorium Tuesday night.
This Forum was unusual because the sponsors, Russian Hill Neighbors, Telegraph Hill Dwellers and North Beach Neighbors don't always get along.
As Moderator Ken Garcia, Examiner Columnist, for the Forum said "District Three Fights Over Everything".
Candidates attending : Joseph Alioto, Jr., David Chiu, Tony Gantner, Lynn Jefferson, Wilma Pang, Claudine Cheng, Denise McCarthy, Mike DeNunzio and Earl Thibodeau.
Questions asked:
What are your accomplishments in District Three and how did you lead?
What is the number one issue in the schools?
What would you do about homelessness, graffiti and illegal dumping?
David Chiu suggested consolidating, streamlining blight ordinance so that everyone knows what they have to do.
Joseph Alioto Jr. suggested ""trash or treasure day" - where residents put out their unwanted items - and people can take what they want and then at the end of the day items would be taken away by Goodwill.
Would you relax zoning in the more density residential districts?
Do you support rent control? (all said yes).
What would you do about crime?
Would you stop new restaurants from opening up in the North Beach? (answer was no - case by case basis). Joseph Alioto Jr. suggested we tell people what they can do, not what they cannot do.
I think most people are relieved that they have rank choice voting - so they can vote for more than one candidate. Walking home last night, many restaurants, store fronts had more than one candidates' sign in the window.
Rank choice voting keeps down the negative campaigning. Because there are so many candidates in District Three - these forums are important in helping voters make their decisions.

Note: Many store fronts are empty on Grant Avenue, there were many restaurants that are normally crowded that were semi-empty - this is a good time for San Franciscans to go down to North Beach and enjoy the evening.
