September 25, 2007

Showed up an hour and half early no one at City Hall but the media people. Around 1:30 Ron Dudum had his press conference on City Hall steps.

I was simply amazed that Ed Jew's name had already been erased from his office door!
Mayor Newsom did a very careful presentation of Carmen Chu. I understand the reason for picking Supervisor Chu (pick someone who will support you). Best pick would have been Ron Dudum. (Ron Dudum is not going away).

I heard someone yell outside in the hallway "not fair!". There were as many media people as spectators at the Board meeting. Carmen Chu was very cool and collected.

Chris Daly brought up subject of stopping the Blue Angels, (including showing tape of the Blue Angel crash. ) Vote was 7 to 3 against the motion. I understand the vote (especially after all the news the last couple of days about the film commission.) I am not sure how I would have voted (my opinion is they should stop flying over San Francisco (over water is fine). But to vote against the Blue Angels would have been another example to the public of the "crazy San Francisco Board of Supervisors." In my opinion this issue is a matter of "safety".

Tommy's Joint was honored for 60 year's of being in business.(I love the pickles in the barrel). 1101 Geary Street - did you know you can park at Park Cathedral Hill Hotel across the street from Tommy's Joint for $1.50 for one hour and $4. for 3 hours?

Jim Rivaldo was honored for all the year's of helping, consulting with the political community of San Francisco. I met Jim while working on Carol Ruth Silver's first campaign for Supervisor in District Six. That was so long ago and Jim had never given up. When many of us have moved on because of burn out, death or a new job, Jim has held on helping new generations of elected officials. Jim is the Dean of San Francisco politics. That was evident at the Board meeting. Sheriff Hennessey spoke about Jim helping him back 28 years ago and Jim is still helping the Sheriff.

I know that both Supervisor Tom Ammiano and Supervisor Bevan Dufty both appreciate and admire Jim Rivaldo's commitment and historic knowledge. Dennis Herrera, the City Attorney spoke about how he would not have been elected without Jim Rivaldo. But I think Supervisor Sophie Maxwell said it best after thanking him for helping her get elected and that he was a "Dream Maker".

Jim got up and spoke about how honored he felt by the acknowledgment at the Board of Supervisors and spoke about how proud Harvey Milk was every time he came to City Hall to walk up the beautiful stairs to the Board of Supervisors chambers instead of taking the elevator.

One of the great things about living in San Francisco is seeing history being made. Sometimes we should remember the wonderful things we have done. Jim Rivaldo is very important to San Francisco and it was nice to see all his friends there and see that he was being honored from both sides of the isle.

Sunday Walk in San Francisco September 22, 2007

Excelsior Festival - Persia Triangle - As always a very successful festival with food, music, activities and great free handouts. (Just a little cold).
Chris Bowen was their registering Republicans, he gave me a Schwarzenegger tag "Protecting the California Dream" (no, I didn't wear the tag!).
Supervisor Geraldo Sandoval gave out free cotton candy.
Julio J. Ramos, Vice President, Board of Trustees San Francisco community college district was there. (A good friend of Geraldo Sandoval) I believe he is running for District 11 Supervisor next year. ramosfortrustee@yahoo.com
John Avalos and his campaign supporters were there handing out literature for his race for Supervisor in District 11 next year. I understand he is currently staff person to Supervisor Chris Daly. Information: www.avalos8.com, 415-584-8584
Larry Hooper there in support of Proposition D- Library bond.
Mayor Gavin Newsom and friend Jennifer Siebel were there (stunning couple).
I admit it, I went to Mitchell's Ice Cream for butterscotch fudge.
Walked around San Francisco Giant's stadium. It was "Running the Bases" day. Huge, huge lines after the game of families waiting so their kids could run around the bases. So cute, these little people running around the bases (and the kids were shown up on the big screen!).
Big line to get into San Francisco Giant's souvenir shop (men's sweatshirts all $15.!).
Saw Agar Jaicks there with his family (former Chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party).

Jack Kerouac Celebration - Haight Ashbury

Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of "On The Road" by Jack Kerouac. Held at All Saints Church, 1350 Waller, San Francisco (where the Diggers gave out free food in the 60's). John Leland, Michael McClure, Barry Gifford and Suzanne Kleid spoke. Book published on September 5, 1957. Interesting response when the question was asked about Six Gallery Poetry reading where Allen Ginsberg first read "Howl" on October 7, 1955 (Fillmore near Union Street). Allen Ginsberg, Phillip Lamanitia, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder and Philip Whelen all read poetry. One of the speakers thought that Gary Snyder's poem "Berry Fest" was better than "Howl". This reading was the first time Kerouac read his poetry in public. Kerouac kept running down to the store and buying jugs of wine and selling the wine by the glass. Other interesting point at one point the movie "On the Road" was almost made with Brad Pitt!.

Beach Impeach 9-15-07

I just have to share my pictures of being in the letter P at the Beach Impeach event at Crissy Field. If you go on www.beachimpeach.org you can see the pictures from the air. Live film on utube.
So much fun. When the two helicopters came over they yelled "lie down"! Reminded me as a elementary school student when they yelled "drop" and you ducked under your table because of a potential atomic bomb. Then we had to get up and wave and then do the wave and certain people ran around and changed the word.
Nice people, an older crowd, they really care about the war, but at the same time they were enjoying themselves.

Potrero Hill Democratic Clubb - SB840

Potrero Hill Neighborhood House is a beautiful spot to have a meeting. Andrew McGuire spoke regarding SB840 Universal Health Insurance (State Senator Sheila Kuehl's Senate Bill). Health security for every resident with full coverage for life. Sounds too good to be true - but would be wonderful. Need two more votes in the State Senate and six in the Assembly. Bay Area members are on board.
There is concern that the Governor might ask for a special session to bring up the health issue and tie it in with reapporumateand water for Southern California . Health coverage bill might be weakened. Information: Potrero Hill Democratic Club. Web Site: www.phdemclub.org Phone 415648-6740

Summer of Love 40th Anniversary

Beautiful day. Tons of people. Happy people. Great people watching. Two women naked with beautiful body paint and glitter were the hit.
I heard music that I had only read about in history books and in commercials. Best part - Jefferson Starship with Grace Slick. Heaven.
