Passionate Struggle: People, Places, Politics

I visited the exhibit "Passionate Struggle: People, Places, Politics" at the GLBT Historical Society exhibit at 18th & Castro. Well worth your time - exhibit presents the rise of gay power in San Francisco. There is a wonderful blown up picture of Harvey Milk and his supporters that stretches across the room. In the picture I saw Harvey, Rick Stokes (candidate that ran against Harvey Milk) and Tom Ammiano looking "very Italian" with his mustache.

There were a number of people in the room talking to each other - the movie "Milk" has increased awareness and interest. I was talking to a student who was studying Harvey Milk and the Gay Movement as he said "like someone studied World War II". Having lived through all this history - that made me feel old!!!!

$3. entry fee. You can buy a GLBT San Francisco Castro map of historic locations in the neighborhood. $4. www.glbthistory.org

Down the street in front of the Castro Theater a volunteer for Repeal Prop 8 was selling buttons and gathering signatures in support of Gay Marriage. In one month he has gathered over 8, 000 signatures.

Repeal Prop 8 - www.couragecampaign.org - over 300,000 people have signed petition to repeal Prop 8.

Shop the Castro - Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District has put together a slick brochure with map showing the shops of the Castro. Brochure says "four times the dollars into our local economy". www.castrocbd.org

Santas - Dolores Park!!!

At first I thought I was dreaming, hundreds of Santas on Dolores Park? Yes. A Santa Convention. The Santas certainly looked like they were having fun.

I overheard one Santa saying "I wouldn't do this if I was sober!". Tons of smiles and singing Santa Songs - how can you not smile and sing ""Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives. A day later this song is still in my head:

Have a holly jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year
I don't know if there'll be snow
But have a cup of cheer

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know

Board of Supervisors from my bed.

I have been sick all week with a cold so for the first time I watched the Board of Supervisors on TV while in bed. I haven't watched it on tv (Channel 26) before because I thought it was like cheating - but to my surprise it's better than being there in person.

First of all it is more comfortable, you can go eat, get something to drink, put on the mute button when you want. You can actually see more - I was surprised that the camera moves around, I saw Eric Mar was in the audience. This was David Campos first meeting as a Supervisor.

And then, in comes the Mayor - shock! He walked in by himself and just starting talking with no notes. It's nice to see the mayor interacting with the Board of Supervisors. This budget crisis has brought Mayor Newsom back into governing San Francisco - here is a chance for everyone to work together. The Board was on their best behavior - sort of (Daly wanted a simple answer). I hope the new Board will have a better working relationship without all the sniping back and forth.
