New Deal/Real Deal/SPUR/April Calendar

New Deal to the Real Deal - April 1, 2008
- Tuesday- Forum on the historical significance of the New Deal and call for universal access to meaningful employment and dignified work.

Interesting and important forum held at the San Francisco Main Library. The full house heard:
Pecolia Manigo - YMAC & Coleman Advocates for Children & Youth
Las Vocicitas (adorable children) performed "Si Se Puede".
Harvey Smith showed fascinating photos from the New Deal (he wore a FDR button and made sure we realized that Eleanor Roosevelt was a big part of the New Deal). He showed pictures from the Bay Area of examples of the WPA projects including the Cow Palace (he wants to save Cow Palace ), Yosemite, Berkeley Rose Garden, Beach Chalet and U.C. Berkeley.
Panel Speakers:
Author and Professor Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz - discussed the history of the New Deal.
Labor Activist and Educator: Karega Hart - Wanted to make sure we knew that it was activists who made the New Deal work - from the bottom up.
S.F. Community Land Trust Found - James Tracy - Talked about how to relate the old New Deal to how we can do a new "New Deal" .
Supervisor Chris Daly - who put the forum together with his staff John Avalos and Rachel Redondiez. He was articulate and specific on what San Francisco should do for its residents asking for a call to action to provide jobs for all San Franciscans.
Supervisor Mirkarimi - spoke eloquently about San Francisco being known as being progressive (but we really are not) - that everything has gone "mushy middle" - that San Francisco had to ask tough questions to get things done right (even if it meant being called "meddlesome").
Renee Saucedo, Program Director La Raza Centro Legal San Francisco Day Laborers Programs - spoke about "Call to Action": Public Works for San Francisco by San Franciscans.
It should be noted that Public Defender Jeff Adachi was in attendance .

This was a well thought out and purposeful forum. Fasinating.

Democratic State Convention/Political Calendar

Democratic State Convention was held in San Jose this weekend. Everyone knows by now that there was no endorsement in the State Senate Race between Migden and Leno - a lot of good people, excellent organization on both sides.

Best details on the convention - go to calitics.com

President Clinton spoke too long. He does love to talk!

Districk Attorney Kamala Harris is a superstar- spoke for Obama.

Everyone was talking about Jerry Brown running for Governor again!

A lot of people were missing - they probably didn't want to be in the middle of the "battle".
People attending included: Jeannie Maher, Claudine Cheng, Jane Morrison, Leslie Katz, Mary Jung, Sal Roselli, August Longo, Willie Brown wowed everyone. Dan Kalb, John O'Riordan, Amos Brown, Eric Jaye, Whitehurst, Jason Wong, Mayor Gavin Newson, Clay Harrell, Jeff Mori, Assemblywoman Fiona Ma who had a karaoke reception. Natalie Berg, Assembly Tom Ammiano, Chris Daly and family, Alicia Wang (who was on stage and spoke.) Paula Fiscal, Donna Patterson, David Chiu, Rink, Scott Weiner,Mary Vail, Bill Barnes, Rick Hauptman, Rafael Mandleman, Chris Arguedas, Matt Tuchow, Le Ann Prifti, Buck Bagot, Michael Colbruno, Mary Hughes, Assessor Phil Ting, Laura Spanjian, Michael Goldstein, Patrick Doyle, Robert Haaland, Gerry Crowley, Toye Moses, Alec Bash, Jim Wachob, Andy Fleischman, Joni Eisen, Christine Pelosi, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Tim Paulson, Francis Tsang, Lee Ann Prifti, Michael Sweet, Cecilia Chung, Clemetine Clarke, Michael Colbruno, Debra Walker, Renee Golanty-Koel, Howard Grayson, John Laird, Julie Soo, Phil Matier, Mitchell Omerberg, Anita Grier, Frances Hsieh, Thomas Brown, Susan Pfeifer and Pat Lakey.

This wasn't a fun convention - but the convention was important - people were there for Obama and Hillary - and they really care about their candidate - there is new blood in the Democratic Party - we just have to move on from June...

It was nice to see at the end of convention there were honoring the "Great Democrats" who had passed away this last year - that Jim Rivaldo's name was on the list.
