Local 1021 - Don't Turn Back the Clock!

I was honored to attend and participate in a panel for Local 1021 "Don't Turn Back the Clock!".

SEIU has launched a campaign to restore pay cuts to union members that are being "de-skilled" into another classification at a lower pay. This is happening even though San Francisco voted for Prop. H in November 1986 which supported the principle of Comparable Worth.

As President of the National Women's Political Caucus we fought along with SEIU for Comparable Worth including hearings in front of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors which eventually ended in the passage by San Francisco of Prop. H .

SEIU will be speaking out and standing up for their members, asking the Health Department and Mayor Gavin Newsom to rescind their action against Clerical and CNA classes (classes which were part of Prop H).

San Francisco Cannot Wait for Health Insurance

Join Rebecca Prozan, Linda Post, Andrea Shorter and Steve Ngo in supporting health care with a public option.

A whopping 76% of voters want health insurance reform to include the choice of a Public Option. In the words of President Obama, the choice of a Public Option will, "keep the insurance companies honest".

So the insurance companies and right wing are fighting tooth and nail to get Democrats to cave on the public option and vote for fake reform like a "trigger" or co-opts. We can't let Democrats capitulate, we need to support Democrats only passing a bill with a strong public option.

Please join us and tell your friends, chances are they are part of the 76% of Americans who want Democrats to be resolved for a Public Option:

moveon.org take your picture with sign and send it to MoveOn to show your support for the public option. (go to move on.org political action - "what 's at stake in health care")

Senator Dianne Feinstein - please send her a letter showing support for Public Option feinstein.senate.gov

Health Care - Congresswoman Jackie Speier

Attended a San Francisco community meeting with Congresswoman Jackie Speier Friday which was held at Temple United Methodist Church.

The meeting was sponsored by the Neighborhood partnership of Parkmerced, Ocean View, Merced Heights and Ingleside.

The room was full, the media was there and Congresswoman Jackie Speier spoke eloquently with specific facts about how health care reform would help Congressional District 12.

For an hour and a half she took questions from the audience - actually most questions were comments - clearly the majority of people in the room were for single payer healthcare. There was a big turn out from the Obama people who are organizing in San Francisco. As before, Jackie Speier came out for a public option in the legislation.

We need to support Congresswoman Speier in her efforts.

Barbara Boxer - writer

Thursday night went to booksigning at Books, Inc. at Opera Plaza to see Senator Barbara Boxer talk about her new novel "Blind Trust".

I enjoyed her first book "A Time to Run". Her new book continues the story of Senator Ellen Fischer. I went an hour early to get a good seat and to be there in case we needed to defend her against anyone who might make a scene against health care reform. Although the meeting was somewhat tense, with security, the audience was very respectful and supportive. A group of people from MoveOn from Davis, California had driven down to support Barbara Boxer.

After a brief reading questions were allowed about her book writing. Writing is Barbara's hobby - some people golf, play tennis, she writes. A long time ago she did in depth writing for the "Pacific Sun". This book was written during the Bush years and the characters in this book are composites of people she met. Senator Ellen Fisher is her "ideal" senator. She said this book is about "not being afraid".

Her last words were that "it was nice being somewhere and not being yelled at".

Afterwards there were still people outside in support of Boxer's support of health care. The sign says it all "thank you".
