Visiting Congressman Phil Burton

Last Friday I visited the Golden Gate National Recreational Park to say hello to Congressman Phil Burton. What a beautiful spot and what an amazing statute of Phil. We were so honored to have him as our Congressman - he did so much for San Franciscans. He created the bill that created the Golden Gate National Recreational Park. He was our Congressman from 1964 to 1983.

The statute was uncovered in 1991. The last picture above was taken that day. It was a great party. There is a piece of paper sticking out of Phil's pocket that says "the only way to deal with the expoiters is to" - what you don't see is "terrorize the bastards".....

Mission District - "Community Peace"

On a beautiful evening I attended a community meeting Tuesday night held by Captain Stephen Tomioka of the Mission Police Station which was held on 24th Street where the three murders were this last weekend.

The room was overflowing with people who heard a summary of what had happened and what the Police Department was doing to stop any more gang violence.

There were representatives from Supervisor Campos, Assemblyman Ammiano, the Mayor's Office and District Attorney office in attendance. There was a sense of unease in the room with many people speaking about their concerns about their safety, increased gang activity, drinking and noise. Captain Tomioka asked everyone to call him directly at 415-558-5444 with any concerns that they may have. He is proposing quarterly meetings in the area to continue outreach in the neighborhood.

There is a fine balance between being protected and having an police encampment. For the moment there is a a blanket of police cars, motorcycles, plain clothesmen along with the gang task force trying to put the lid on any more violence.

Members of the audience asked for more foot patrols with training in working with the community including their interaction with children and families. The mayor's office is asking for stimulus money to help the neighborhood. The community wants the Recreations Centers open for young people so they have somewhere to go instead into the streets.

Walking home I bypassed the shrine outside George's Liquors, there was a man very distraught talking in Spanish to the shrine obviously in grief. It reinforced the feeling that this is about real people, in a real neighborhood. So sad. We all have to help.

As someone said - "we want community peace".

People and Power in San Francisco - Mike Miller

It was such an honor Thursday night to hear Mike Miller speak about his new book "A Community Organizer's Tale: People and Power in San Francisco". The book is about the rise and fall of the powerful multi-issue Mission Coalition Organization during the Alioto administration.

The reading was held at Crossroads Cafe & Book Store at Delancey Street. We had the special treat of hearing Mimi Silbert, the leader of Delancey Street give the introduction. She talked about Mike Miller being a student of Saul Alinsky and organizing in the Mission. She said Mike's work exemplifies "together we have power".

Mike Miller talked about being born in San Francisco and going to University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, organizing with Saul Alinsky and eventually working with the Mission Coalition Organization (MCO). He talked about organizing tenants, obtaining jobs, neighborhood organizing - he looked for willingness - and then responded to their demands.

He said we need an independent group pushing our agenda, not the "president's agenda". We should listen to the people, don't stand in front - let them tell you their stories then think through what is needed.

He started ORGANIZE! Training Center in San Francisco which is devoted to building and strengthening people power.

DeWitt Lacy - candidate for Supervisor District 10

I attended the launch event for DeWitt Lacy's campaign for Supervisor in District 10. The fundraiser was held at Temple on Howard Street.

There was a large crowd there to hear Civil Rights Attorney DeWitt Lacy talk about why he is running for Supervisor in District 10 in 2010. He believes in a collective vision and wants San Francisco to value the eastern shore, economic environmental development and to work with police to have the same rights and priorities as other parts of the City.

His facebook statement says "implausible endings become significant historical facts when one exhibits the courage to challenge what others have considered impossible".

District 10: Potrero Hill, Bayview Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Silver Terrace, Dogpatch, Little Hollywood, Portola districts.
