District 8 Town Hall Meeting - "Legacy seat"

Tuesday night I attended District Eight Town Hall meeting at Magnet, a gay men's health outreach center on 18th Street.

The "big four" Rafael Mandelman, Rebecca Prozan, Laura Spanjian and Scott Wiener were all in attendance. It has been less than a week since their first meeting, overall their presentation was even better than last week. The meeting was moderated by the Director of Magnet - Steve Gibson. The audience listened intently and there were some interesting questions:

Halloween in the Castro - all agreed that something could happen in the future, but it would have to be well planned, supervised and "organic".

Supervisor Campos' Sanctuary Legislation - Rafael Mandelman, Laura Spanjian and now Rebecca Prozan have all endorsed the legislation. Scott Wiener would vote no because of "public safety issues". Rafael Mandelman said "Scott Wiener is exactly wrong and Laura Spanjian is exactly right" on sanctuary question.

Who did you support - August Longo or Chris Daly for Region 4 - Assembly Districts 12, 13, and 19.? Wiener and Prozan supported August Long - Spanjian and Mandelman supported Christ Daly

Do you support Whole Foods and Trader Joe's going in on Market Street? All agreed before these two stores open up that the issues of traffic and parking need to be resolved.

Do you support Assemblyman Tom Ammiano marijuana legislation legalizing and taxing marijuana? All four said yes.

As Rebecca Prozan said, District 8 is a "legacy seat". She is right. This is going to be a tough race - one year away....

Upper Noe Neighbors 2010 District 8 Supervisor Forum

Thursday night I attended the Upper Note Neighbors monthly meeting which was held at the spectacular Upper Noe Recreation Center (Day Street at Sanchez). Neighbors met with candidates running for District 8 Supervisor in 2010. This was the first time all four candidates spoke to a gathering.

There is a term in real estate called "turnkey" which is a term used when a space being rented or purchased and is ready to move into. (turn the key, and open the door). The four candidates are "turnkey" - ready to move in. Smart, hard working, involved caring individuals.

Rafael Mandelman - rafaelmandelman.com - Lawyer, currently President of Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, Vice Chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party, Commissioner on the San Francisco Board of Appeals, Past President of Noe Valley Democratic Club, Board Member of Livable City.

Rebecca Prozan - rebeccaprozan.com - Assistant District Attorney, grassroots organizer, former Obama Delegate. Was Mayor Willie Brown's Liaison to District 8, Legislative Aide to Supervisor Bevan Dufty. She was past co-chair of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club.

Laura Spanjian - lauraspanjian.com - Assistant General Manager for External Affairs for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Treasurer of the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee, past co-chair of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, EQCA Board member and member of Noe Valley Democratic Club, Friends of Noe Valley Valley and Eureka Valley Library Steering Committee.

Scott Wiener - scott2010.com - Deputy City Attorney, past co-chair of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, member of the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee and past chair, President of the Eureka Valley Promotion Association, helped found Castro Community on Patrol. Scott Weiner had the first literature - very impressive eight page brochure which included a window sign.

They have all worked together for very a long time - which brought a different dynamic to the meeting. None of them were afraid to answer questions - they are leaders.

Questions included the new sanctuary law - Rafael Mandelman and Laura Spanjian supported, Scott Wiener opposed and Rebecca Prozan doesn't know how she would vote on this legislation.
The parking meter extension came up, all candidates said this matter was still in the works and some kind of plan should be implemented.
None of the candidates would cross a picket line and they all had fast passes (Spanjian has a Smart Car).
All candidates, and people in attendance had high praise for Supervisor Bevan Dufty for his hands on problem solving and constituent work.

Ingleside Police Community Meeting "We work for you"

Wednesday night I attended community meeting at Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth held by Supervisor John Avalos and Captain David Lazar of the Ingleside Police Station. Meeting was called to discuss the fatal stabbing of Eric Buschman on October 12th around 8 p.m. while unloading his truck at Athens and Excelsior.

The new Captain of the Ingleside Police Station talked about the changes at the station based on the Police Effectiveness Research Forum to improve safety through stronger community policing.

There is an ongoing investigation regarding the stabbing - no information is being released at this this time, more to follow. The police are asking residents to notify them with any information that will help them with the investigation. The room was full of residents who were worried, some angry, they wanted to know what to do. Captain David Lazar addressed their concerns, saying crime was down, staffing was up. There were questions asked about the gangs in the neighborhoods, graffiti, foot patrols, knowledge of the police officers, treatment of teenagers.

Captain Lazar has a daily email that citizens can subscribe to. He said the community needs to "be their eyes and ears" to work in partnership with city government and the police to resolve public safety issues. Ingleside Police Stations works with 30 groups a month and they have organized a community advisory group to advise Captain Lazar.

Supervisor Avalos will follow up with another community meeting to discuss graffiti, better lightening in the neighborhood and to follow up with ideas and solutions from this meeting.

Eric Buschman's memorial will be this Saturday, October 24th at 1 p.m. at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eric Buschman Memorial Fund c/o First National Bank, 975 El Camino Real, South San Francisco, Ca. 94080.
