Tuesday night I attended District Eight Town Hall meeting at Magnet, a gay men's health outreach center on 18th Street.
The "big four" Rafael Mandelman, Rebecca Prozan, Laura Spanjian and Scott Wiener were all in attendance. It has been less than a week since their first meeting, overall their presentation was even better than last week. The meeting was moderated by the Director of Magnet - Steve Gibson. The audience listened intently and there were some interesting questions:
Halloween in the Castro - all agreed that something could happen in the future, but it would have to be well planned, supervised and "organic".
Supervisor Campos' Sanctuary Legislation - Rafael Mandelman, Laura Spanjian and now Rebecca Prozan have all endorsed the legislation. Scott Wiener would vote no because of "public safety issues". Rafael Mandelman said "Scott Wiener is exactly wrong and Laura Spanjian is exactly right" on sanctuary question.
Who did you support - August Longo or Chris Daly for Region 4 - Assembly Districts 12, 13, and 19.? Wiener and Prozan supported August Long - Spanjian and Mandelman supported Christ Daly
Do you support Whole Foods and Trader Joe's going in on Market Street? All agreed before these two stores open up that the issues of traffic and parking need to be resolved.
Do you support Assemblyman Tom Ammiano marijuana legislation legalizing and taxing marijuana? All four said yes.
As Rebecca Prozan said, District 8 is a "legacy seat". She is right. This is going to be a tough race - one year away....
