Police Community Meeting in the Excelsior

On Saturday morning there was a San Francisco Police/Community meeting on violence held in the Excelsior at Monroe School on Madrid Street.

The room was full of neighbors who listened to Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, Police Chief Heather Fong, Captain O'Leary and Representatives from the City Attorney and District Attorney's office.

The audience was serious and attentive, many people spoke about being afraid to come outside because they were afraid for their safety.

The number of police in the area have been increased from 107 to 122 officers . There are motorcycle patrols, gang task force help, warrant sweeps and a beefed up presence in the area.

Brian Marquez's father spoke eloquently about his son who was killed, asking why the murderer had not been caught and wanting something done. His testimony was so emotional (I was in tears) - he made this all so "real".

Some of the best testimony came from the youth. Eliza Oliva spoke about planning a Youth Peace Walk in the Excelsior District on October 24th walking from the Boys and Girls Club in the Excelsior to Excelsior Park and having a speak out to discuss both problems and solutions to the youth's current problems.

There will be a follow up meeting on October 16th at 6 p.m. Balboa High School, 1000 Cayuga, San Francisco.

Enough!

Just perfect. California Democratic Party put on a Obama watch party at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at Embarcdero .
I was smart enough to get there right on time to get a seat right up front of a huge, huge tv screen (major sound) - so when Obama spoke it was like being right there. When the people in the room clapped and yelled - the sound was amazing.

Everyone should be thanked for their hard work putting this party on. (I saw Alex Bash, Rick Hauptman and Hene Kelly working ).

I sat next to my buddy Cllifford Waldeck and Joni Eisen and her husband at the Potrero Hill table. Joni is the President of the Potrero Hill Democratic Club and very active in Clean Money. Joni was celebrating her birthday - drinking Cosmos!

There were cookies, glow in the dark jewelry, rubber duckies and clapper noise makers (well it is our New Year!)

Obama was just spectacular - just right - not over the top - and he looked and sounded so strong - especially when he looked directly into the camera - like John Wayne!

The Democratic Party is very serious about helping get out the vote in Nevada (I believe Obama is behind in the polls in Nevada ). People personally came around to each table saying you could call from you home to Nevada voters .

You can also train to be a Deputy Field Organizer.
1. You attend a two-day Camp Obama training.
2 . Make at least two weekend trips to Nevada between September 12 and October 26, leaving on a Friday (to arrive no later than 9 a.m. Saturday) and returning on Sunday.
3.Travel to Nevada for the GOTV period, arriving October 31st and staying through Election Day November.
Camp Obama in San Francisco is September 20th through 21st.

School Board Endorsements - S.F. Party

San Francisco Democratic Party endorsed Rachel Norton, Norman Yee, Jaynry Mak and Sandra Lee Fewer for Board of Education last night.

At the meeting last night Debra Walker announced , unless San Francisco votes for Bobbi Lopez for School Board there will be no lesbian elected officials in San Francisco. Bobbi Lopez just started her campaign so she is hindered by her late start.

Del Martin - I was sorry to hear about Del's passing. My last memory of Del was flying roses at City Hall when she and Phyllis were married - such a joyous event! My first memory of Del was 35 years ago when I met Phyllis and Del in NOW when I was just trying to figure out what the feminist movement was all about. They were my mentors - I would just listen to them and learn. It was history in the making.
My condolences to Phyllis.
