Attended Noe Valley Town Hall meeting sponsored by the Noe Valley Democratic Club last night at St. Philips Church. The jammed packed meeting was moderated by Supervisor Bevan Dufty (he did a masterful job of moving a complex agenda).
Captain Stephan Tacchini from the Mission Station spoke briefly, but unlike at other meetings there was not much discussion because the Noe Valley area is a relatively safe area with some problems with burglary, graffiti, car break ins (GPS systems are hot right now). A SAFE representative spoke about setting up block groups in the area. Bevan Dufty has committed himself to attending the lst SAFE meeting in any SAFE block formed in District Eight (this is amazing).
Joe Rogoff and Glen Moon spoke and answered questions about the new Whole Foods store opening up on September lst replacing Cala Foods on 24th Street . Lots of questions answered - Supervisor Dufty has worked closely with Whole Foods to get past the Planning Commission quickly - that hard work has payed off since this item is up in front of the Planning Commission today on the consent calendar. Whole Foods has committed themselves to at least one shuttle bus a week for people to go to another Whole Foods store while construction is going on, and they want to hire employees that formerly worked at Cala Food. The room was full of very loyal fans of Cala Foods. Whole Foods feels they are competitive on pricing on organic foods. They want to continue recycling and will monitor trucks loading and unloading and are going to find parking in the neighborhood for their employees offsite.
The most interesting part of the meeting was meeting with Sergio Diaz from Neutraceutical who spoke about the Real Foods store that was closed down five years ago. For people in this meeting this was the first time anyone has been able to ask Real Foods questions. People are still very upset by why and how Real Foods closed. Real Foods wants to demolish the current building and build a store with two stories above - possibly housing. A number of people suggested it might not be smart to build a store right across from Whole Foods. Good news - a settlement was reached with the Real Foods employees Tuesday - with employees given past wages.
Bevan Dufty introduced two people from the audience as candidates for Supervisor in District Eight (his district) Laura Spanjian and Rebecca Prozan. He said it was a compliment when someone wants to run for your position. At least that is what he said to Mayor Gavin Newsom! Supervisor Dufty is running for mayor. Supervisor Dufty works hard, he is very charming and he handed out business cards to everyone in the room - that means he is also very smart, prepared and focused.
