Banquet in the Streets - Right to Choose!

"My pledge is that I endorse the worker called boycotts of the HEI Le Meridien Hotel and Hyatt Fisherman's Wharf. I will not eat, meet or sleep at either of these hotels until the labor disputes have been resolved and the workers have the justice and equality that they deserve"

Sunday afternoon there was a celebration and support for the Workers who are asking for workers' petition for a fair process to choose a voice on the job.

"Who Will Speak If We Don't?"
Who will speak if you don't?
Who will speak if I don't?
Who will speak so their voice can be heard?
Oh, oh, who will speak if we don't?

Who will speak when they're treated unfairly?
Speak the truth in the places of power?
Stand beside those who have no respect?
Oh, Oh, Who will speak if we don't?

Marshall Ganz - "leadership matters"

Many of us had the honor Sunday night to hear Marshall Ganz discuss his book ""Why David Sometimes Wins: Leadership, Organization, and Strategy in the California Farm Worker Movement"

He started out by saying "it was nice to be home". "I have many circles in this room". Loyal friends and supporters overflowed Delancey Street Crossroad Cafe to hear him speak. From the California Farm Workers Movement, Nancy Pelosi campaign to Barack Obama he has helped people organize over the years.

His book is about looking at the past and looking forward with the "rising generation". "We need people to step up. Belief of the possible not the probable".

Well worth your time to read and "recharge"!

Irish American Democratic Club - Irish Reunification

Attended Irish American Democratic Club meeting last night at Northern Police Station on Fillmore Street.

Public Defender Jeff Adachi was speaking to the audience about supporting the Public Defender's office in restoring their funds to the San Francisco budget. Board of Supervisors vote will be next Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors chambers. The Irish American Democratic voted to support the Public Defender and to take action to call the Board of Supervisors on his behalf.
Public Defender Jeff Adachi - sfpublicdefender.org

Phil Ting - Assessor-Recorder of San Francisco spoke about Close the Loophole. There is a petition on line to sign. Information: closetheloophole.com.

The Club also voted to support the following Resolution which is being proposed at the California Democratic Party Executive Board meeting this weekend.

Support for Irish Reunification:

Whereas, the logic of history, international law, human rights and peace dictate the reunification of the island of Ireland, and the reality of the moment - in the Good Friday Agreement and the development of the All-Ireland Institutions of governance - attest to this momentum; and

Whereas, in the past the California Democratic Party and the State Legislature adopted the MacBride Principles for Northern Ireland and strongly endorsed passage of the Good Friday Agreement among the previously warring parties, in part because of the dedication of President William Jefferson Clinton, his administration, and Senator George Mitchell in seeing it to fruition; and

Whereas, the contribution of the Irish-born, and Irish Americans to this state, nation, and the Democratic Party are legion;

Therefore be it resolved, that the California Democratic Party strongly supports Irish Reunification and urges both the State Legislature and the California Democratic Congressional delegation to support all peaceful actions that support the final reunification of the island of Ireland by all electoral and diplomatic means necessary; and

Be it Further Resolved, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Democratic members of the California Congressional Delegation, the Democratic members of the State Legislature, the President and Vice President of the United States and the U.S. Secretary of State.

Co-Authored by:
Thomas Patrick O'Shaughnessy, 43rd AD, Chair, Irish American Caucus, CDP -
Jeanmarie Maher 13th AD, Chair Emeritus, Irish American Caucus
Co-Sponsors: Senator John Burton (Ret.), California Democratic Party Chairman
Susan Shannon, 42nd AD Rep., E. Board
