Noe Valley Democratic Club District 8 Debate

Last Thursday the Noe Valley Democratic Club held a District 8 Supervisorial Debate at St. Philips Church with candidates Rafael Mandelman, Rebecca Prozan and Scott Wiener. (Candidate William Hemenger was not able to attend).

Debate was moderated by the new President of the Noe Valley Democratic Club - Hunter Stern. As in past debates, these three candidates were smart, articulate and well prepared. It will be up to each of these campaigns to explain why their candidate should be the next Supervisor in District 8. This is a very important Supervisorial Seat - in a way this competition makes each of these candidates even better. Stay tuned - all of this will be very interesting.

HANC - MUNI - As the crisis turns

Thursday night I attended monthly meeting of the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council at The Urban School on Page Street. HANC held a discussion "MUNI: As The Crisis Turns". Meeting was chaired by Pi Ra with the following speakers:
  • Irwin Lum - President of the Transit Workers
  • Sue Vaughn - Transit not Traffic
  • Bob Planthold, Senior and Person with Disabilities Advocate, Senior Action Network
  • Bruce Oka - SFMTA Director
The panel has all worked together in the past, all seasoned transit experts. Everyone agreed that everybody uses the Muni and that we should be a transit first city.

Irwin Lum said that the Muni service has been gutted and the bus schedules are unrealistic. He wanted to make sure the public knew that the drivers were committed to their jobs. Eric Williams, a Muni driver spoke up to explain that Muni drivers pay for all their own health insurance including all dependents.

Suggestions included completing an audit on Muni, extending parking meter hours, reinstating state license fees, review work orders, generate new revenue ideas and change the format of the SFMTA Board to be elected not appointed by the Mayor.

Dave Snyder of the Transit Riders Union gave "A Call for Action". muniriders.org

Mission Statement:
Because of the economic downturn and a series of missteps over the past 20 years, the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) has fallen on hard times. On December 5, 2009, 6 Muni lines were discontinued, 16 were foreshortened and another 22 lines now operate for fewer hours during the day. At the same time time fares were raised. More cuts and more fare increased are planned.

With these dismal projections in mind, neighborhood, environmental, transit advocacy, and grassroots community groups realize the need to take a fresh look at Muni. The purpose of the Save Muni Summit is therefore to identify improvements for bringing San Francisco's vital public transit system up to standard. It is hoped that the discussion that begins March 6th will lead to the citywide movement required to appropriately address and resolve this critical San Francisco problem.

Information from this meeting will be posted on SaveMuni.com.
