HANC - MUNI - As the crisis turns

Thursday night I attended monthly meeting of the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council at The Urban School on Page Street. HANC held a discussion "MUNI: As The Crisis Turns". Meeting was chaired by Pi Ra with the following speakers:
  • Irwin Lum - President of the Transit Workers
  • Sue Vaughn - Transit not Traffic
  • Bob Planthold, Senior and Person with Disabilities Advocate, Senior Action Network
  • Bruce Oka - SFMTA Director
The panel has all worked together in the past, all seasoned transit experts. Everyone agreed that everybody uses the Muni and that we should be a transit first city.

Irwin Lum said that the Muni service has been gutted and the bus schedules are unrealistic. He wanted to make sure the public knew that the drivers were committed to their jobs. Eric Williams, a Muni driver spoke up to explain that Muni drivers pay for all their own health insurance including all dependents.

Suggestions included completing an audit on Muni, extending parking meter hours, reinstating state license fees, review work orders, generate new revenue ideas and change the format of the SFMTA Board to be elected not appointed by the Mayor.
