Young was a troop commander in the Presidio where he became the first African American National Park superintendent. Shelley's book seeks to restore this hero to the ranks of military history. At the same time, it informs our understanding of the role of race in the history of the American military. Noah Griffin, a long-time admire of Charles Young, will introduce the talk with a poem and a song in Young's honor.
Redmond Kernan, a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, former Director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, he dedicated his retirement years to the Presidio of San Francisco forming links with dozens of San Francisco organizations to advocate vigorously for the preservation and presentation of Presidio history.

Speaker Brian Shellum will describe the amazing life and career of Charles Young as told in his recent book "Black Officer in a Buffalo Soldier Regiment".
