Elvis has left the building, but never the City

I attended the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday in honor of Supervisor Tom Ammiano's last day as a supervisor after 14 years.

Tom is a survivor. I pulled down the picture of Tom Ammiano's first inauguration picture with the following supervisors: Willie Kennedy, Tom Hsieh, Barbara Kaufman, Susan Leal, Angela Alioto , Kevin F. Shelley (President of the Board), Tom Ammiano, Mabel Teng, Carol Migden, Sue Bierman and Terrance Hallinan. That was a long time ago!

Board President Aaron Peskin introduced Ammiano "The man, the myth, the legend". "He gave voice to the modern Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Mirkarimi said that Tom became the archangel of the progressive movement. Supervisor Elsbernd said the "the Board of Supervisors without Tom Ammiano is like the Vatican without the Pope".

Tom said goodbye "Elvis may have left the building, but never the City".

I was touched by the press sitting through the whole meeting just waiting to say goodbye to Tom - there is great affection there. The staff of all the supervisors sat out in the audience listening to all the praise - it was a nice moment.

It feels like Tom have left us - he hasn't - so we shouldn't be sad - we should celebrate!

Other items from the Board:

Supervisor Alioto-Pier gave a Commendation to McCormick Kuleto's for honoring 272 veteran's on Veteran's Day at Kuleto's at 221 Powell Street, San Francisco. Over 82,000 meals were given to veteran's nationwide from Kuleto's. That's nice.

Supervisor Aaron Peskin proved once again that he is a master of running a meeting. There were nine Eastern Neighborhood items that were voted on, a tedious discussion, but somehow Peskin kept it all straight, made in clear, made the legislation manageable - final vote will be at the December 9th meeting Board of Supervisors meeting.

Thank you - Ammiano/No on 8 Rally

What a beautiful weekend! Attended Supervisor Tom Ammiano's "Thank You Party" for all his supporters on his election to the Assembly. The party was held Friday night at the LGBT Community Center. Friday was a warm night and we were on the top floor looking out at San Francisco with the full moon. There was no sign in sheet - this was a party! Sushi, mushroom crepes, hand made tamales, steak on a stick and fried chicken. Great stuff!
Assemblyman Mark Leno - soon to be State Senator spoke - what a great team - we are lucky in San Francisco to have such hard working, articulate legislators.
After 14 years, Tom's last day on the Board of Supervisors is Tuesday, November 25th.
Saturday I attended the No on 8 rally at City Hall - I wanted to be counted as part of the crowd. I walked down Market Street from Church, as did everyone else, there was a mini-parade on both sides of Market Street to the parade which started at 10:30 a.m. Such a beautiful day, lots of people - mostly young with lots of babies. The first voice I heard was Tom Ammiano yelling out: "Everyone is Queer today!". That jazzed up the crowd. Mark Leno spoke "Yes we Will!".
I also heard State Senator Carole Migden speak. Let's hope the Courts come through on reinstating marriage. It just doesn't feel right.
