Harvey Milk State Senate Race Debate

Harvey Milk Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Democratic Club held debate today at the Milton Marks Auditorium in San Francisco . Debate was moderated by Belva Davis with Senator Carole Migden, Assemblyman Mark Leno and Commissioner Joe Alioto Veronese debating in regards to the District 3 State Senate Race.

Kim Corsaro, Steve Jones, Cynthia Laird and Michelle Meow asked questions from the podium with questions at the end read from post cards from the audience.

The debate started out with everyone being nervous, which then turned to tenseness which then turned to terse words from Carole Migden and Mark Leno.

Issues that were brought up included budget cuts, climate change, equal rights, health care, 3rd strike and prisons, affordable housing, impeachment of Cheney/ Bush. The question of why Mark Leno is running against an Democratic incumbent - he responded - "democracy".

Attendees included Angela Alioto and Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, Connie O'Connor, Gwenn Craig and Donna Sachet.

Comment: Both Assemblyman Leno and State Senator Migden should review the tape that was being filmed by Bob Dockendorff. They both will see how angry they sounded which did not add anything to the debate. This is going to be a very long campaign, I hope after this endorsement is over we can all start talking about issues. This bickering is not helping anyone.

Big night. Great food, drink. Outstanding turnout of elected officials.

Robert Morales and Chuck Mack introduced Mayor Gavin Newsom, Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congressman Tom Lantos, State Senator Carole Migden, Assemblywoman Mary Hayaski, Supervisor Aaron Peskin and Art Pulaski, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, California State Federation of Labor.
The union reemphasized that they want to build the middle class and build the
labor movement.

Robert Morales even suggested that Gavin Newsom would be a good choice for governor.

Other people attending that I saw were John Burton, Tim Paulsen, Mike Casey, Kevin Shelley, Leroy King, Walter Johnson, Ross Mirkarini, Geraldo Sandoval, Assemblyman Mark Leno, Phil Ginsberg, Claudine Cheng, Holly Thier, Larry Martin and Dick Blum. There were many people there I did not know.

There is a strong relationship between City Hall, Gavin Newsom and the Teamster's. Special mention was made of the health plan San Francisco is putting in place, and that San Francisco is not contracting out work and instead is using city employees.

This was a very classy event.

Jim Rivaldo Memorial

Jim Rivaldo would have loved his memorial (just the way he wanted it). It was sort of a class reunion, a very serious crowd.

Every once in a while you go to an event and you realize why you still care about San Francisco politics. The people in the City Hall's rotunda all worked with Jim. We have all been through the wars.

The following people spoke:

Judge Ellen Chaitin, Nick Rivaldo (Jim's father), Peter Gabel (Jim's friend from the Harvard year's in the 60's), Assemblyman Mark Leno, Fred Maye sang, Supervisor Tom Ammiano gave a very emotional, funny speech, V. Roy Lefcourt and Ellen Chaitin's two children Juliet and Adam Chaitin-Lefcourt were the stars with their funny, heart touching remembrances of Uncle Jim. V. Roy spoke about loosing his good friend and part of their family. Lastly, Gwen Craig sang Amazing Grace (the same song she sang for Bill Krause at his memorial.

A wonderful display of Jim's work was set up. What an amazing list of names and an amazing list of day-glow colors!

Rally to Save Rent Control

Save Rent Control Rally at City Hall.

San Francisco Tenants Union, Senior Action Network, SF Labor Council, State Senator Carole Migden , Assemblyman Mark Leno, PUC Manager Susan Leal, Supervisor Tom Ammiano, Jake McGoldrick all attended.

This is extremely important. Pro rent control people are putting on an alternate rent control measure. Signatures on petition need to be in by November 20th.

SPUR Election Wrap-Up November 12, 2007

SPUR Election Wrap-Up meeting. Room was jammed pack with people. Jim Stearns, David Latterman and Ben Tulchin went over tentative review of outcome. Votes are still being counted so there was no time to do an in depth review.

Absentee percentage was 54%. Absentee voters tend to be more conservative.

District 8 came in first in voting percentage, next was District Seven.

Predicting 30% turnout. There seems to be an increase in voting in District 6 - which makes sense because this is where there has been new buildings being constructed.

Mayor has 72% of the vote and Mike Hennessey can be elected "Sherriff for Life".

Proposition C Public Hearings on Ballot Measures passed which will significantly change what is on the ballot in the future. No last minute items.

Proposition E Question time failed even though in polling in looked like it was going to win. Two factors seem to change the vote , Gavin Newsom was against Prop E and money was spent against Prop. E and Chris Daley was for Proposition E.

Because of lower turn out paid media had bigger input. Electorate was not turned off by too much mail or tv .

Progressive to moderate voters defeated conservative coalition.

San Francisco is a "yes" city on initiatives.

District Eight loves Gavin Newsom.

Prop. A- Was behind in the polls, but early cable tv helped along with a targeted gotv effort.

The election is not on election day anymore it is a moving target with most absentee ballots decided by the Sunday before the election.

Don Fisher was the deciding factor in Prop. A. He became the punching bag. San Francisco is an environmental town. Campaign against H pushed "H is for Hummer".

Looking to the future in 2008:

Supervisors Jake Mc Goldrick, Aaron Peskin, Tom Ammiano and Gerar do Sandoval are termed out. Ross Mirkarimi and Sean Elsbernd are up for another term and are expected to be re-elected with no problems. The unknown factor is the Ed Jew seat currently occupied by Supervisor Carmen Chu. The longer Supervisor Chu is in office the harder it will be for Ron Dudium to be elected. District Nine will be heavily contested. Progressives want a Supervisor to support Ross Mirkarimi, since Tom Ammiano will be going on to the Assembly.

School Board members Eric Mar, Mark Sanchez, Jill Wynns and Norman Yee are up for election. Eric Mar has already signed up to run for Supervisor in District 1. You cannot run for two races at the same time. So there will be at least one open seat.

Community College members Natalie Berg, Milton Marks III, Julio Ramos and Rodel Rodis are

up for election.

Tom Lantos is up for Congress in the 12th with rumors of Jackie Spier running.

Assemblywoman Fiona Ma and State Senator Leland Yee are up for election with no known opposition.

The big battle will be the State Senate race between Carole Midgen and Mark Leno.

We also have the Presidential race in February along with Park Bond A.

Information:

San Francisco Board of Education passed resolution to register all willing and eligible 17.5 year old students in SFUSD and launch a bigger Youth Vote program in partnership with the Youth Commission, Department of Children, Youth and their Families, SFUSD Student Advisory Council, SFGOV Television, the Mayor's office and David Binder's pollster firm.

There will be a three-day required voting curriculum for seniors and optional curriculum for 9-11th graders and organizing mock elections in schools with ballots and polling stations. Student leaders will announce the result of the vote a week before the election to let adult voters know how they feel about candidates and propositions.

David Binder will conduct student focus groups and annual student surveys that will accompany the ballots. This will be the first time the Board and the District will be getting true opinion surveys from high school students. Information: Jane Kim jane@janekim.org

HANC Monthly Meeting/Supervisor Mirkarimi

This is what District Elections is all about. A long time neighborhood organization with a dedicated Board sitting down with Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi. For over an hour with no notes, no aides, just sitting with a room full of neighbors talking about the issues in District Five. The issues of Work force development, housing, traffic, skateboard park, Linden Street calming, 55 Laguna, possible DMV moving, Cala site, children moving back into neighborhood and of course, Muni - and the N Judah.

The Supervisor and HANC have worked very hard on many neighborhood issues.

Neighborhood Park Bond - I know it is hard to believe but there is a February election!!!!

This is a $185 Million Bond with some interesting items:

Specific items have been picked including playground safety, waterfront park and bay access, fixing and repairing all restrooms, athletic fields, trail restoration and community grants.

What is unusual are strict accountability standards. Projects are identified and budgeted. This is a contract with San Francisco residents.

There will be monthly published reports on bond spending and construction progress.

Annual hearing to review bond program and order an audit.

Citizens' General Obligation Bond Oversight Committee will publish an annual independent report on bond spending and stop the sale of bonds if necessary.

Therefore Hillary Clinton was not on the ballot. This also probably explains why Hillary Clinton did not do better at the recent San Mateo Presidential Straw Poll.

Questions were asked about Iraq, torture, the economy, No Child Left Behind.

Everyone could vote. Kucinich came in first. Ron Paul second. Barack Obama third and then John Edwards, Bill Richardson and one vote for Al Gore.

Finally, we have a real campaign in California! All the speakers were articulate and excited about their candidate.

Schroeder's on Front Street is a very old time German restaurant with a huge bar. Patrons out in front were drinking out of huge glass "boots". They also have polka dances. A fun and different place that you might want to try or have a meeting.
