Muni meeting with Chu /January/Feb. Calendar

Supervisor Carmen Chu called a meeting at the Sunset Recreation Center on Lawton Street to meet with Muni representatives and to answer questions from the audience.
Muni was represented by their high ranking individuals who actually make the decisions.
Supervisor Chu was very well versed on the issues.
Muni had a power point presentation which included the concepts that in the future Muni would have accurate schedules, additional service hours with 100% reliability. Safety is Muni's number one concern.
Some of the items the Muni is considering is adding buses to the N Judah (but this would mean moving buses from other lines - which is probamatic). Some areas of the city could have buses stop every three blocks instead of every two blocks. Possible ticketing drivers that are double parked. Possible signal priorities for buses. Pedestrian safety including lights, islands and stronger markings showing where to stand. Muni wants to build up ridership.

Residences spoke about pedestrian safety concerns , drivers using their cell phones (which is not allowed). It was suggested that Muni work with the San Francisco school system to coordinate muni schedules, this is especially needed for families who do not have automobiles.

There was a very emotional discussion from a resident regarding urination by drivers from their Muni buses at the end of the Great Highway. Muni is aware of the problem and it was nice to see at the end of the meeting the person from Muni in charge of this item talking with the individual looking at a map detailing how they could work together on this this problem. The gas station closes at 8 p.m. I hope they work something out.

David Philpel and Ron Dudum were in attendance along with Bob Twomey from Assemblywoman Fiona Ma's office and Cammie Blackstone from Supervisor Sean Elsbernd's office along with Leah Rowell from Senator Leland Yee's office.

Democratic Presidential Candidates Forum

Huge crowd (over 500 people) attended Raoul Wallenberg Jewish Democratic Club Democratic Presidential Candidates Forum last night at the San Francisco Jewish Community Center.
Candidates' Surrogates:
Senator Hillary Clinton: Dennis Herrera, San Francisco City Attorney
Senator John Edwards: Jeff Soukup, California Co-Chair, John Edwards for President
Senator Mike Gravel: Lynn Gravel Mosier, Daughter of Senator Gravel
Senator Barack Obama: Jonathan Spalter, Former Clinton/Gore Foreign Policy Advisor.

Forum was moderated by John Rothmann (KGO Radio and former President of Raoul Wallenberg Democratic Club). Michael Sweet, President of Raoul Wallenberg Jewish Democratic Club gave the welcoming remarks.

The forum was very structured with serious questions asked of each surrogate including the issues of social security, the economy, the war, education, Middle East and global warming.

Everyone agreed that we need to put a Democrat in the White House in 2009 and that it was a good day because it was the last time we had to hear President George Bush give his State of the Union speech!

Each surrogate gave their reason for supporting their candidate:

Dennis Herrera: Worked for the Clinton's in the White House and believes Hillary Clinton has the most experience , is strong and will get things done. He said that he thought that Hillary Clinton was running for President at a more difficult time than when Bill Clinton ran before.
Jeff Soukup: Was part of a nation wide group of people who interviewed all the candidates and "hands down" John Edwards was the best candidate and the "most electable".
Lynn Gravel Mosier: Because he is my father.
Jonathan Spalter: Barack Obama brings new leadership.

Bayview Affordable Housing Initiative, Bella Abzug

Bella Abzug - "How One Tough Broad from the Bronx Fought Jim Crow and Joe McCarthy. Pissed off Jimmy Carter, Battled for the Rights of Women and Workers, Rallied Against War and for the Planet, and Shook Up Politics Along the Way". Authors: Suzanne Braun Levine and Mary Thon.

Oral history book about Bella Abzug one of the pioneers of the women's movement (Second Wave). Primarily in the 60's and 70's including fighting the Vietnam War and help start NOW, National Women's Political Caucus.

What I did not realize was she came within 1% of winning the race for U.S. Senator from New York in 1976. Daniel Patrick Moynihan beat out Bella Abzug.

I went to a fundraiser for Bella Abzug at Peter and Carol Mezey's home in San Francisco many, many years ago . Yes, Bella was wearing one of her famous hats and I cherish the campaign button I was given that day.
At the beginning of each chapter is a Chronology explaining what happened in that period of time. Speakers in the book include Susan Brownmiller, Midge Costanza, Ron Dellums, Geraldine Ferraro, Jane Fonda, Betty Friedan, Edward Kennedy, Ed Koch, Shirley MacLaine, Bill Moyers, Ann Richards, Eleanor Smeal, Gloria Steinem, Barbra Streisand, Marlo Thomas, Maxine Waters and Faye Wattleton.

Pro-Choice, Rent Control, Nancy Wilson

One of those days when everything is happening on the same day:

January 19th Roe v. Wade 35th Anniversary March in San Francisco. Thirty five years ago I was walking down the street in San Francisco with notes in my hand about a meeting as a member of NOW in regards to legalizing abortion. It was exhilarating to learn that Roe v. Wade came through from the Supreme Court. 35 years later I go to show my support for pro- choice and I feel like I am in a "time warp".

First of all I went to the wrong rally, there was the anti-choice rally going on the other side of Ferry Building (huge crowd) with signs that were chilling and not like any other that I have ever seen in San Francisco. At the Pro-Choice rally the rhetoric was like going back to the 70's - anti-government, anti-man (I thought we had gone through that already?)

Then Cindy Sheehan spoke who is running for Congress against Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. She looked younger and thinner than I expected. The first words out of her mouth were I am running for Congress in the 8th District "please vote for me". Cindy, that's not what it is all about - it is about San Francisco!!!

Bought a Roe v. Wade Anniversary campaign button and left , it was too depressing to listen to anymore .

Save Rent Control Tenant Convention Agenda at 474 Valencia Street, San Francisco. The room was jammed packed with people The meeting was held with a specific agenda in place to set up a campaign structure to fight the anti-rent measure. The pro-rent control side had to put a competing eminent domain measure on the ballot to counteract the anti-rent measure. This is a very complicated issue, it is also an extremely important to all Californians because we could loose rent control which would not only effect renters but would change San Francisco forever.

Ted Gullickesen explained the two ballot measurements:

Government Acquisition, Regulation of Private local government: Property, Constitutional Amendment.

Bars state and local governments from condemning or damaging private property for private uses. Prohibits rent control and similar measures. Prohibits deference to government in property rights cases. Defines "just compensation". Requires an award of attorney fees and costs if a property owner obtains a judgment for more than the amount offered by the government. Requires condemned price when property is put to substantially different use than was publicly stated. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Increased costs to many governments due to the measure's restrictions. The fiscal effect on most governments probably would not be significant. (Initiative 07-0015) It is anticipated this will be Proposition 98.

The competing Eminent Domain Measure Which Saves Rent control

Eminent Domain. Acquisition of Owner-Occupied Residence. Constitutional Amendment.

Bars state and local governments from using eminent domain to acquire an owner-occupied residence, as defined, for conveyance to a private person or business entity. Creates exceptions for public work or improvement, public health and safety protection, and crime prevention. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: The measure would likely not have significant fiscal impact on state or local governments (Initiative 07-0018). It is anticipated that this will be Proposition 99.

The above information given out as a handout at the meeting.

State Senator Migden, Assemblyman Mark Leno, Supervisor Tom Ammiano and Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval spoke. Of course Robert Pender was there along with Robert Haaland, Rafael Mandelman, Mark Sanchez, David Campos, Tommi Avicolli-Mecca and Sasaneh Solaimani. Many people had very sad stories to to tell about being evicted - this is a very scary ballot measure - especially for people who do not have a lot of money. As soon as I receive more information I will post the information on this blog.

Nancy Wilson

Saw legendary song stylist Nancy Wilson at the Hearst Theatre. Nancy Wilson is beautiful, my favorite singer. She is 70 years old (does not look like it!) - the crowd was very eloquent in black drinking here champagne and wine before going in. The Hearst Theatre is a perfect place to hear performers. I was thrilled that she sang my favorite song "Guess Who I Saw Today" and a moving "Those Golden Years". It was an honor to be there last night.

C. W. Nevius, San Francisco Calendar Jan 19th

C. W. Nevius, the Metro columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle spoke at the City Democratic Club meeting last night.
Chuck Nevius is a very funny, likable person (just like he seems on tv). He talked about the Chronicle changes (the new website - I like it!). The Chronicle is more "active" with comments from readers, and information in their articles to help readers understand the issues. (i.e. at the end of articles they have websites, phone numbers and statistics which are very helpful and don't muck up the articles themselves. )
But what is exciting is that the Chronicle is going to have more locally driven stories.
This is great news! (what were those fireworks that went off last night!!! - freaked me out at first - then I thought maybe it was because of the convention in town?).
He talked about being a Metro columnist and being more upfront in the news especially since he is writing about "hot issues" such as homeless in the park, crime and guns. You could tell that he really cares about getting the story right and reporting all sides of the story. San Francisco is a complicated city and the issues are tough. People don't always like what he writes.
The audience asked lots of questions with the homeless and guns being the most controversial.
He talked about the changes in the newspaper world including reduction in subscribers, dealing with all those comments! and bloggers.
Columnists are important (they just seem more human).

San Francisco End Mtg - January Calendar

Women's Democratic Women's Forum and Irish American Democratic Club - Endorsement Meeting - Held at 455 Golden Gate Avenue in the State Building. Large crowd with both the Migden and Leno people bringing out their supporters.
State Senator Migden was strong and fiercely believes she has done an excellent job and should be re-elected. Assemblyman Mark Leno was charming and stood away from the podium when speaking- both candidates have loyal supporters.

Both of these clubs are very "issues" orientated and their were many questions asked of everyone. What is nice about this election is that "real people" speak for their candidates for President of the United States. You can tell these people have taken time our of their lives because they believe in their candidate. It is nice to see new faces.
Both Jeannie Maher, the President of the Irish American Democratic Club and Lorrie Kaos, President of the Democratic Women's Forum did an excellent job of organizing the meeting.
Attendees that I saw (large group of people walked in outside the auditorium, chatted, voted and left) included Agar Jaicks, Jane Morrison, Doris Ward, Harriet and Norm Ishimoto, Gerardo Sandoval, Dan Dillon, Evelyn Wilson, Scott Weiner, Joan Simmons, Isabel Wade for Yes on Prop. Jake McGoldrick, Frances Hsieh, Rafael Mendelman, Toye Moses, Beth Moseley, David Strand, Patty Moran, John O'Riordan, Mary Jung, Eileen Kivlehan, Jim Wachob, Fran Schulberg, Jordanna Thigpen and Sharon Johnson . Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

New Direction for the New Year Reception at Westin St. Francis Hotel. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has a New Year party every year. This year's event was low key with Bay Area people who spoke in very quick order to show their support for the Speaker: Christine Pelosi - Nancy's daughter started off the introductions with Mayor Gavin Newsom, Attorney Jerry Brown and John Burton who introduced the Speaker.
As always Nancy was gracious, showing great presence and articulating a New Direction for the Democratic Party and Congress for the New Year. The room was of hope for the new year with a Democratic candidate for president who will win in November.
The room was jammed packed with Democrats (people that have been in politics for years and years - people who really care about Nancy).
Everyone was talking about the February primary. People seemed to be for either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.

Prop. A Rally, San Francisco Political Calendar

Prop A Rally - Dolores Park Saturday morning, a beautiful day to show off this glorious park. How can you beat the view, kids and dogs all in one place? Supervisor Bevan Dufty did a great job chairing the rally introducing State Senator Carole Migden, Assemblyman Mark Leno, Supervisor Mirkarimi and Supervisor Sandoval. Yomi Agunbiade, the General Manager for Park and Rec spoke reminding us to vote because a two-thirds vote is needed.
Donald Strickland from the 49er's spoke. He talked about growing up in San Francisco and using the parks for recreation and sports. As he correctly pointed out San Franciscan's don't have a lot of backyards to play in which makes parks even more important. He said his mom was glad he could get out and let loose with all that extra energy he had. To this day Strickland uses the park facilities to workout.
Prop. A is on the ballot on Feb. 5th . Therefore it is important for everyone to talk to their friends and remind them to vote. Especially since Prop. A is down in the ballot. Mary Hughes of Stanton and Hughes is running this campaign. Information: Patrick Hannan 415-240-4150 www.fixourparks.com.
