American Apparel - Valencia Street - A problem?

Saturday morning I had to send my rent check out by 10 a.m. so I decided to go to the Anti American Apparel Store rally being held by Pirate Cat Radio 87.9 against the proposed store at 988 Valencia Street.

First of all, 10 a.m. on a Saturday is too early - especially for this street - everyone was on their way to Boogaloos for breakfast. There were a few people there. American Apparel is trying to open a store at 988 Valencia Street next door to Artists Television Access. Stop American Apparel wants to keep Valencia locally owned and leave the box stores in Union Square. There motto "Your Mission - Not Theirs".

First of all, this is a very tiny store. It's between the 24th and 16th Street Bart Street stations which might help get people to go down the whole street and look at all the other stores. On the other hand I just looked at the American Apparel website americanapparel.net - they are huge!!!

Stop American Apparel website: stopamericanapparel.wordpress.com. I understand that Supervisor Bevan Dufty has come out against this project.

There will be Planning Commission meeting this Thursday, February 5th at 1:30 p.m. Room 400, City Hall, San Francisco if you wish to hear more details.

Valencia Street, like other neighborhoods is hurting financially - and some new stores could help - however, there is a balance that is needed in this neighborhood - (like that awful big cell phone store next to Good Vibrations!).

Citizen Hope - A new organization

Attended "Citizen Hope" Mixer last night at Mercury Lounge on Folsom Street .

Citizen Hope seeks to empower people to bring about change through community action and social networking. This group was recently formed to keep the Barack Obama community together. They have done an amazing job. There was a huge, huge crowd - mostly the younger generation - lots of energy and a great new resource to the Bay Area political community.

No speeches - just meeting people.

The star of the evening was District Attorney Kamala Harris. Supervisor David Chiu, Supervisor David Campos, Supervisor Eric Mar, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, Assessor Phil Ting and Community College Trustee John Risso attended along with" ready to run" for Supervisor candidates Debra Walker in District Six, Rafael Mandelman in District Eight and Rebecca Prozan in District 8.

Steve Ngo, newly elected Community College Trustee is on the local steering committee and one of the main organizers of this event. For more information go to citizenhope.org They are also on Facebook - search: Citizen Hope.

You might not recognize the new venue Mercury Lounge, great place to have a party. They even had special menus made up welcoming Citizen Hope and putting "Citizen Hope Cosmos" on the menu. Better yet they had CNN up on the tv screen.

Some of you might have been to the location on 1582 Folsom Street as the old site for "Hamburger Mary's" - famous for their hamburgers, great breakfast and slow service .

Who is in charge?

Seven hour Board of Supervisor meeting. What a painful meeting to watch. People were squished in waiting for the meeting to start. There was overflow in the North Court downstairs.

The meeting started with recommendations from the Budget and Finance Committee. Supervisor David Campos making it very clear that he will be paying attention to details, demanding best practices and that "process matters" -" there are rules in place for a reason".

Then there was four hours of testimony, I went home to watch the proceedings on tv - I was shocked by how more painful it was to watch on tv looking at the speakers directly. Such passion for their jobs, for their fellow workers, for the people they help - it just makes you so, so sad.

Mayor Newsom - are you watching? While you are away, is anyone working on what happens when this is finished? What happens to people with no health care, homes with schools closing? How is this going to work. Who is in charge?

I applaud the efforts of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for at least trying to help get a handle on how to implement these cuts.

Budget cuts - " We take it personally"

I attended the Labor-Community Speak out on the California Budget Crisis held at the Plumbers Hall on Market Street last night. This meeting was held after a short San Francisco Labor Council Meeting. Huge crowd.

There was a welcome by Executive Director Tim Paulson and City College Trustee Chris Jackson. Bob Twomey, District Director for Assembly District 12 (Fiona Ma) gave an overview of the California Fiscal Crisis. Very depressing. Bob Twomey reiterated that people have to work this week to help get legislature to pass a budget.

There were speakers from K-12 education, Community College, CSU, City and County of San Francisco, non profits and the State of California all discussing what could happen. This is all disheartening especially in regards to health service and our school system.

As someone said, San Franciscans need to understand how these cuts will effect them. Another person who said his fellow worker was just laid off - said "we take it personally".

This morning I received an email from Assemblyman Tom Ammiano giving us an update, I emailed him back telling him that he was mentioned last night because of his "rainy day session" funding which saved the San Francisco school last year - I told him I was so depressed by all the bad news - he wrote back this morning "Don't be depressed. There is a lot we can do if we keep working."

So don't give up!
