Plan C meeting

Attended Plan C's first membership meeting of 2009 last night at Mission Dolores School on 16th Street. Big crowd, especially considering there was a huge storm going on outside.

Mike Sullivan, Chair of Plan C gave a overview for 2009 - with Plan C's focus on condominium conversion reform and one-time allowance of conversion, for a fee, for those in the condo lottery.

Supervisor Bevan Dufty, Supervisor District 8, gave an update on what is happening at City Hall. Supervisor said "he loved his job". Supervisor Dufty is now on the expanded Board of Supervisors Budget Committee during the budget hearing comprised of John Avalos, Carmen Chiu, Ross Mirkarimi, David Chu and David Campos. Supervisor Dufty believes in compromise when dealing with budget ideas. There was a long discussion on TIC's, Bevan Dufty owns a TIC and has been waiting to convert to a condo - therefore he will not be able to vote at the Board on TIC issues.
Questions from the audience included street repair, fire house closures (will not happen) and chain stores.

Scott Weiner , past Chair of the Democratic County Central Committee and current President of Eureka Valley Promotion Association spoke. Scott Weiner talked about quality of life issues in the Upper Market and Castro area. Increase in public spaces in area, wider sidewalks in the Castro and improving the Harvey Milk Plaza at Muni underground stop at Castro and Divisadero Street . Working to fill vacant buildings and attract new business to the area. Public safety issues were discussed including panhandling and drugs. Want to increase block party participants to organize their own block party to get to know their neighbors and make the neighborhood safer and cleaner. The question of chain stores came up - Scott Weiner said he would have supported American Apparel on Valencia Street - he does not believe in complete ban on box stores - because you then stop services from coming into a neighborhood.

Steve Adams, Senior Vice President, Western Region of Sterling Bank, a leading TIC lender, and a member of Plan C gave an update on TIC lending marketplace. He said that the values of homes in San Francisco is holding up. Steve Adams is also President of the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro (MUMC) . He announced there will be a farmer's market in the neighborhood on Wednesday starting in April.

Rebecca Prozan, Laura Spanjian and Scott Weiner were all introduced as candidates for Supervisor in District 8. City Treasurer Jose Cisneros, City Attorney was also introduced.

Plan C's poster says "The moderate voice of San Francisco". They are looking for new members.
