Supervisor John Avalos - Town Hall Meeting

On a beautiful Saturday morning I attended Supervisor John Avalos' first Town Hall meeting at the Excelsior Youth Center. The crowd was very large with residents of all ages.

The Supervisor said it was "an honor" to be their Supervisor in District 11. He wants to work with the community including young people to come up with solutions to public safety and budget resources and he wants to help families stay in San Francisco.

The main focus of the meeting was the city budget crisis and community based violence prevention.

A large crowd heard updates from:

  • Captain O'Leary (Ingleside Station) spoke about crime in the district (which has gone down) - they have increased staffing and their goal is "getting to know you" personally so there is a personal connection.
  • Judson True, MTA talked about pedestrian safety and Balboa Bart Station update .
  • Paul Henderson (Office of District Attorney)
  • San Francisco Public Defender's office talked about the Clean Slate Program.
  • Maria Su from Department of Children Youth and their Families
  • Community speakers: Jose Luis Pavon, Homies Organizing the Mission to Empower Youth (H.O.M.E.Y.) and Jessica Cotrim, Student, June Jordan School for Equity
  • Youth Performer: Alexandra Mojica - Back in the Days

Questions from the audience included city hall budget cuts- where do kids go?,
profiling by police, ICE raids, DA prosecutions, home robberies, pedestrian safety and stimulus money.
