Orange Chairs, Better Streets

Went to the "Draft Better Streets Plan" Release event at Mint Plaza (5th and Jessie Street) on Thursday. I went for three reasons:

1. There had been a great deal of advertising about Help Improve San Francisco Streets - so I thought I would go to the first meeting - and be on top of the issues.
2. Orange chairs. I wanted to revisit the orange chairs at the Mint Plaza (I adore those chairs!).
3. New yogurt shop across the street called "Yogurt Bar at Mission" at 600 Mission Street between Fourth and Fifth Street. The best "french vanilla" yogurt - you make your own sundae with toppings - (strawberries!). I am totally addicted.

It was a beautiful day and I was a little early so I went into the Blue Bottle Cafe at 66 Mint Street to try their famous coffee. There sat Mayor Gavin Newsom having coffee. This is one of those coffee places where each cup of coffee is made one at a time - takes three minutes to make.

Basically this was a Press Event outside - it was a beautiful day. Lots of press. Unfortunately the only sound was being sent directly into the tv cameras so there was no sound for the audience. Introductions started and Astrid Haryati, the Mayor's Greening Director (came from Chicago) spoke and introduced the Mayor.
Basically this plan sets up guidelines for making the city's streets safer, greener and more enjoyable. City Agencies and the public worked together to come up with this plan. This all makes so much sense. As Mayor Newsom said, our standards should be high - higher than Chicago, Paris or Venice .
If you go to www.sfbetterstreets.org you will find a Draft Plan for your review. I wanted to hear the rest of the presentation - there were many people introduced, however some "drip" of a photographer stood in front of me and wouldn't move, so I tried to go elsewhere but I couldn't find a spot where I could hear - I am sorry I can't list everyone's names. Lots of people are involved.

The Mayor also mentioned that he just had a cup of coffee which was good but very, very strong. (You got that right - what a buzz!) - Great coffee - Blue Bottle Cafe, 66 Mint Street, San Francisco - bluebottlecoffee.net.

My thrill was going over and introducing myself to Sal Castaneda from KTVU Channel 2! I have been watching Sal for year's - depending on him for traffic news - I had to take a picture! TV news people become friends - you depend on them.

Better Streets plan will have public hearings during the month of June (see calendar below ) and then the Street Plan will be revised and finalized.
