Last night was the vote for Chair of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee.
Supervisor Aaron Peskin won over Scott Weiner by a vote of 18 to 16.
The meeting was tense- all of this was a big deal. Bottom line Peskin won because the "HOPE" slate brought in enough new votes for Peskin plus the vote of Assemblywoman Fiona Ma and State Senator Leland Lee.
Also elected:
First Vice Chair: Melody Nutter
Second Vice Chair: Rafael Mandelman
Third Vice Chair: Mary Jung
Fourth Vice Chair: Michael Goldstein
Recording Secretary: David Chiu
Treasurer: Debra Walker
Corresponding Secretary: Joe Julian
Peskin won, but it was Scott Weiner's night. For two hours people got up and spoke for Scott and talked about his integrity, hard work and how he brought the DCCC together. Scott deserved all this praise. There is $35,000 in the bank and a brand new website still under construction that will be a great tool for all of us. sfdemocrats.org.
That said, Aaron Peskin is brilliant, he votes right and he knows how to chair meetings and get things done. I am confident that the DCCC will work well together and will do a excellent job.
There were lots of Obama people there (new energy) along with Alex Bash pushing for people to come out Monday night (July 28, 2008) to rally against John McCain for President, at the Fairmont Hotel from 6 to 8 p.m.

*Direct passthrough of water costs to tenants - ACTION ALERT!!!!
When: July 28, 2008 - Monday
1 p.m.
Where: City Hall, Room 263
What: Vote in Land Use Committee regarding legislation allowing direct passthrough of water costs to tenants. Legislation is being pushed by Supervisors Alioto-Pier, Elsbernd and Chu.
This is a rent hike. This legislation needs six votes since Mayor Newsom will sign it. People are requested to testify against this legislation.
The three members of the Land Use Committee are Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval and Supervisor Aaron Peskin.
Arguments against: This is a rent increase measure - trying to raise rents in the most expensive rental housing market in the country?
Current law already allows for water rate passthroughs - excess water use can be passed on directly to tenants when we are in drought years and landlords can always petition the Rent Board to pass on water costs to tenants when water use actually increases.
The current proposal allows for a passthrough of water rate increases. If water rates go up $1 a gallon, tenants pay for half that increase. Tenants rent goes up even if tenants decrease the amount of water we use. That does nothing for conservation.
Action: Contact Land Use Committee members expressing opinion that this legislation should not go through.
