My political education continued Monday at the Land Use Committee meeting in City Hall regarding ordinance authorizing pass through from landlord to residential tenant of 50% (was going to be 70%!) of water and sewer services cost increases imposed through adoption of water and sewer rates. This legislation was being pushed by Supervisor Alioto-Pier, Supervisor Elsbernd and Supervisor Chu.
Thankfully, Randy Shaw from Tenderloin Housing Clinic, Ted Gullicksen from San Francisco Tenants Union and Mitchell Omerberg from Affordable Housing Alliance all spoke to the issue of this being a rent increase - not a conservation measure.
Until the public comment portion of the hearing you would never have known real people would be affected by this legislation, but after discussion (and huddles) it came to light that if this legislation passed - and there was an water audit for each apartment building - there would have to be an increase in San Francisco employees - since there were only two water auditors for the whole city!!!
I totally agree with Randy Shaw's article in BeyondChron beyondchron.org this morning "Supes Table Green Rent Increase Scheme " this was another example that the public has to pay attention, attend and speak up on items on the agenda. The item was continued.
Why don't we try and push "best practices" out to landlords and tenants - so everyone including the environmental community are all on one side?
I also attended the San Francisco Labor Council "Meet Our Candidates" meeting at the SEIU 1021 offices.
I didn't realize this was going to be a "working meeting". The room was full (they ran out of chairs), they had food first (real food, meat balls and spaghetti, chicken) - then Eric Mar from District One, David Chiu from District Three and John Avalos from District Eleven and Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi were introduced as San Francisco Labor Council's endorsed candidates for Supervisor.
Tim Paulson, Executive Director of the San Francisco Labor Council made the introductions and Mike Casey from Local 2 made a brief speech . Josie Mooney, Conny Ford, Dennis Kelly, Howard Wallace, Michael Theriault and Leroy King were all in the audience.
On September 6th the Labor Council will kick off their efforts to get these candidates elected to office by doing voter registration, vote by mail drive, phone banking and GOTV . After the introductions the meeting broke up into individual candidate rooms so labor members could learn more about these candidates and the districts.
Everywhere I go, I keep hearing how important these elections are for the future of San Francisco -that is why you are seeing so much activity in the middle of Summer!
