New Year's Celebration -Congresswoman Pelosi

Speaker of the House, our own Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi held her annual New Year's celebration at Delancey Street yesterday.

As always, many, many loyal Pelosi people showed up to hear Nancy Pelosi wish us a Happy New Year and give us an update on what was happening in Washington D.C.

Congresswoman Pelosi talked about President-Elect Barack Obama's first stop was to come to her office to talk about the Economic Recovery Package. The first item passed in the Congress was the Pay Equity Act. She said "get use to success". She repeated over and over again "We need action now". She said that Obama was brilliant, he has a vision and he knows how to influence people . She wants to end the war in Iraq and her last remark was she wanted to help reverse Yes on Prop 8 in California.

I was pleased to hear that Speaker Pelosi had appointed LeRoy King to cast her vote in the Electoral College in Sacramento for President-Elect Barack Obama. What an honor- LeRoy is on his way to Washington D.C for the Inauguration!

Nancy Pelosi = California Historical Society

What do Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the California Historical Society have in common?

Speaker Nancy Pelosi's first campaign for Congress in 1987 was at 678 Mission Street, San Francisco the same address where California Historical Society is located today !

Last night there was a book talk and signing ("Know Your Power" A Message to America's Daughters") with Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi talked about her journey from homemaker to House Speaker. The event was sold out. The interview was done high on the steps where she remembers on election night Phil De Andrade told her she had won. Since this was an election to replace Congresswoman Sala Burton after her death the campaign was only six weeks long. She was the first daughter of a congressman to every be elected to congress. She talked about growing up with a sense of responsibility and public service. Her inspiration was John F. Kennedy.

There was no discussion about politics ( but there was a small demonstration outside which you could hear when someone opened the door).

The Speaker is one of the most important woman in the United States today - you certainly could tell that by the Secret Service detail around her. No pictures were allowed (except for the first minute of the meeting). As always, Nancy was gracious and said hello to everyone.
