SPUR - Supervisor David Campos

Attended a SPUR meeting Wednesday night to hear Supervisor David Campos - the new supervisor from District 9.

David Campos is clearly ready and prepared to be the District 9 Supervisor. Having been a lawyer, a Commissioner on the Police Commission and campaigning for at least a year in District 9 he knows what needs to be done.

Some of his comments:

  • He believes government is collaborative - "good ideas become better ideas".
  • He has an open door policy. He likes to look at different options and find common ground.
  • He his committed to working with the Mayor.
  • He wants to get away from the politics of personality.
  • He went to law school with Chair David Chiu.
  • He wants to develop public safety. He wants to work to help find a new police chief - to find someone who has the trust and respect of the community. He wants to expand police community foot patrols.
  • Budget concerns - should act and be thoughtful, consider the human impact, not do anything to make the recession worse, use best practices, efficiency, review contracts and make sure there are competitive bids. Review overtime, duplication - have accountability. Work with State and Federal government to find new funds.
  • Believes in "smart growth".
  • His strengths are public safety and caring about the school system (after school program and saving "rainy day fund").
  • Wants to promote local jobs - think creatively. Market and promote San Francisco.
  • He is not against development if it is the right kind of development. He wants economic growth and affordable housing.

Board of Supervisors - A New Day

I attended the first Board of Supervisors with the new supervisors in place with President David Chiu chairing the meeting.

It was like the first day of school - everyone was attentive, being careful. The hardest part was seeing new people in seats - it just didn't look right. The meeting was definitely different - Supervisor Chiu believes in short meetings. Seating was as follows:

  • David Chiu - President
  • Left side of the aisle:
  • David Campos
  • Bevan Dufty
  • Michela Aioto-Pier
  • Eric Mar
  • Sean Elsbernd
  • Right side of the aisle:
  • Chris Daly
  • Ross Mirkarimi
  • Sophie Maxwell
  • David Chiu
  • John Avalos
There was a short agenda, however, under Public Comment, there was an hour discussion from people from the "Coalition to Save Public Health". This was sobering testimony about cuts in health care. There are going to be budget hearings next week - this isn't going to be easy.

Coalition to Save Public Health: Coalition of neighborhood organizations, public health workers and concerned residents that is fighting against the cuts to public health and human services and pushing for solutions to the budget crisis that has the least negative effect on our communities. Held rally out in front before the meeting.

They stand for:
  • Short term action to stop budget cuts to public health and vital human services
  • Long term vision for community needs, jobs and the economic future of San Francisco
  • Budget reform
  • Revenue generating measures on a June Special Election

Sad News - John Behanna

I am sorry to to announce that John Behanna, after a long illness passed away last night. He was a Democratic activist, a photographer and a good friend to many people.

I first met John during the George Moscone campaign for mayor - he was so nice to me - even though I was just a volunteer in my first political campaign. John has been a long time member of the San Francisco Democratic League, a proud member of the "Burton machine" and a founding member of the Irish-American Democratic Club.

Recently, a reception was held to honor John Behanna and his newly published book of photographs called "Aspen Odyssey" which he gave out to his friends as a way to show his appreciation for their friendship.

John wanted to stay alive to see Barack Obama elected President of the United States - I am glad he got his wish.

I will let you know when I hear further details about a memorial.

New Year's Celebration -Congresswoman Pelosi

Speaker of the House, our own Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi held her annual New Year's celebration at Delancey Street yesterday.

As always, many, many loyal Pelosi people showed up to hear Nancy Pelosi wish us a Happy New Year and give us an update on what was happening in Washington D.C.

Congresswoman Pelosi talked about President-Elect Barack Obama's first stop was to come to her office to talk about the Economic Recovery Package. The first item passed in the Congress was the Pay Equity Act. She said "get use to success". She repeated over and over again "We need action now". She said that Obama was brilliant, he has a vision and he knows how to influence people . She wants to end the war in Iraq and her last remark was she wanted to help reverse Yes on Prop 8 in California.

I was pleased to hear that Speaker Pelosi had appointed LeRoy King to cast her vote in the Electoral College in Sacramento for President-Elect Barack Obama. What an honor- LeRoy is on his way to Washington D.C for the Inauguration!

Picture is of Hadley and Susie Roff with Speaker Pelosi.

Assembly District 13th Delegate Selection Election

On a gorgeous Saturday morning Assembly District 13th Delegate elections were held at the LGBT Center on Market Street.

The delegates elected at this meeting go to the California Democratic Party Convention being held in April in Sacramento. 44 candidates ran for 12 delegate seats along with one Executive board representative. There are two reasons why this is so important:

  1. John Burton, former Congressman and President pro Tem of the Senate is running and will win the position of State Chair of the California Democratic Party.
  2. John Burton will be a strong voice for the people, especially against Governor Schwarzanegger and will organize to take back the governorship in 2010.
Assembly Tom Ammiano gave brief remarks. He said that they working hard to get a budget passed but that Governor Schwarzanegger was blocking a solution. Tom said even the Republicans hate Schwarzanegger!
