CAAGE 2009 Lunar New Year Luncheon - Moo!!!!

Attended the CAAGE 2009 Lunar New Year Luncheon held at the Empress of China Restaurant in Chinatown last Friday.

Large crowd of City employees enjoying a New Year celebration. Rose Chung was Mistress of Ceremonies. Big banquet, large crowd with plenty of elected officials paying their respects including Supervisor David Chiu, Police Chief Heather Fong, State Senator Leland Yee, Supervisor Eric Mar, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and Treasurer Jose Cisneros.

The best part, and the funniest event I have ever seen at a political event - they had a "Moo contest". I know it is the Year of the Ox (symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work), but for fun they had employees from the different city departments come up to the mike and Moo - and the person who Mooed the best - won a prize. (You had to be there to hear how funny they looked and sounded) - there was the rapper moo, the boy/girl moo that got a little racy, in fact some of the sounds were absolutely disgusting (and so funny!). It was nice to see this big room full of happy people. As someone poignantly said "give ourselves a hand for still having a job".

Committee Members: Don Chan, Gloria Chan, Jason Chan, Jack Chin, Rose Chung, Bayard Fong, Willie Fong, Frances Hsieh,Tyrone Jue, Helen Low, Rita Mah, Jaynry Mak, Katy Tang, Francis Tsang, Art Wong, Clifton P. Wong, Winnie Xie.

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano - Open House

Attended Assemblyman Tom Ammiano's Open House yesterday at his 13th Assembly District office on Golden Gate Avenue. He is on the 14th floor with a beautiful view.

The State Building was closed for President Lincoln's birthday (I think this was one of Arnold's vacations) - so there was no air conditioning - but the room was packed with Tom's very loyal friends including Attorney General Jerry Brown, Supervisor David Campos, Supervisor Bevan Dufty and Supervisor Eric Mar. Candidate in District Six Debra Walker attended along with Ina Dearman, Jane Morrison, Anita Sanchez, Norm Rolfe, Rink, Roma Guy, Michael Goldstein, Maggie Rubenstein, Libby Denebeim, Roma Guy, Marie Jobling and Dennis Kelly.

Tom said the Budget vote would probably be this Saturday - he spoke about the "sterling people" Speaker Karen Bass and Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. Tom is the Vice Chair of the Assembly Human Resources Committee, a member of Assembly Appropriations Committee, Education Committee, Health Committee and Rules Committee . Additionally, he is a member of the Sate Legislature's LGBT Caucus and Environmental Caucus and the Assembly Coastal Caucus (that's alot of work!).

Of course, there is no one like Tom - who else would have "Dorothy's slippers" from the Wizard of Oz framed on the wall. That's what we all need to do - wish an end to this economic disaster.

Board of Supervisors Meeting - short meeting

Attended Board of Supervisors meeting which lasted one hour.

Overturned Mayor's veto on possible June election - (keeping the option open). The Board is working together along with other stakeholders to come up with a consensus.

Supervisor David Campos continued to show he reads and pays attention to all items on the agenda questioning an error made on the credit for Pilara Family Foundation lease and due diligence on lease for 3801 Third Street.

Campos Rule - Not wise for lease to expire because you then have less leverage in negotiating the lease and always look for other options so next time the lease is up you know your options.
I learn a lot from the Supervisor questions - he has put the Department Heads on notice to be there and be prepared.

I also appreciate it when Supervisors explain why they are voting the way they are on important items - especially with new supervisors.

Outside City Hall there is an environmental sculpture be installed by Patrick Dougherty comprised of 18,000 lbs of freshly cut willow saplings interwoven into the treetops of the double row of sycamore trees in Civic Center Plaza.
