Message from Victoria

On Friday afternoon I went out to the Excelsior Boys & Girls Club to join"Marching Towards Peace" a vision of student Victoria Kupu who wanted to do something for her friend who was killed by violence.

Message from Victoria:

"I wanted this march to happen mainly because I want our youth/teens to come together to show the rest of the community that although some of us contribute to the problems around us, there are many of us who are part of a solution. I know establishing a Utopia is out of the question, but what we could establish is common ground. We can stand solid together like a wall of brick but divided we are like grains of sand. Each movement of non-violence is not just words it's the foundation to build on top of each other to make change".

It was a beautiful, hot day - the march was so much fun! - walking down the middle of Mission Street! People were honking their horns in support, patrons from stores and bars came out to watch. All of this ended at Excelsior Park with speeches, poetry and white balloons let go in the sky after naming the people who have lost their lives in violence. All of this was very inspiring.

Press and tv showed up. Candidate for Supervisor in District Eleven - John Avalos was there along with supporters from Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, BHNC's Excelsior Teen Center, SF Youth Commission, Excelsior Boys & Girls Club, CYC Outreach, Excelsior Community Convener and United Playaz.

Victoria and all her friends are going to continue their efforts. I hope we will all help her. Victoria is a role model for all of us.
