Public Safety - Data and Education

Attended the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Public Safety Committee meeting Monday. Members David Campos, Ross Mirkarimi, Michela Alioto-Pier along with John Avalos from District 9 heard testimony for over three hours regarding the San Francisco Police Department's traffic stop protocols.

San Francisco Police Department gave their presentation and then the community lead by Ana Perez, Director of the Central American Resource Center, gave testimony regarding the continued targeting of members of the San Francisco's immigrant community.

This is a very serious, complicated issue. Supervisor Campos should be commended for calling for this meeting. Just bringing up the issue brings the problem up front for review. It is unfortunate that we are in the middle of a budget crisis, the Police Effectiveness Review is not complete and we are loosing our Police Chief - all things that will slow down any solutions.

As the Lawyer Guild spokesperson said "we need to review data (computer reports about the stops) and continue to educate the police officers on how to avoid the alleged or perceived profiling.

Everyone needs to work together - there is clearly a "communication problem". We need to be safe, but we must continue to ask "how" we do this.
