CAA City College Candidate Forum

Last night Chinese for Affirmative Action along with the Asian Law Caucus, Chinese Progressive Association, Community Educational Services and Manilatown Heritage Foundation held City College Board Candidates Forum on Kearny Street at the Chinese Cultural Center in the Hilton Hotel.

Candidates Natalie Berg, Roberto Figueroa, Mary Hernandez, Chris Jackson, Carl Koehler, Milton Marks, Steve Ngo, Rodel Rodis and Bruce Wolfe all attended this forum.

Department of Elections was there to help people register to vote . Last day to register to vote is October 20th.

This was an extremely well prepared presentation including a handout with a grid showing the candidates responses to 19 issues important to these organizations. The grid alone is a great resource and in a glance you can see the issues that are important to these organizations.

The main concern is the continuance of building and finishing the Chinatown/North Beach City College (15 years in the making). Other questions included, affirmative hiring practices, prioritize job opportunities for impacted neighborhood residents and increase funding for vocational English and upholding the City's Sanctuary Ordinance.

Questionnaire asked the candidates their positions on Prop 4, 6, 8 and 11 and Prop A,B, N, M and Q. The questions were serious, detailed and on a number of items, specific candidates were asked specific questions. At one point the question to the current board members was why the Chinatown campus had not been built yet? - the answer was current lawsuits, poor land use planning, lack of communication with the neighborhood during planning. All candidates stated they would make the Chinatown/North Beach campus their number one priority.

Co-Sponsors: Asian PacificAmerican Student Success Center, Cameron House, Charity Cultural Services Center, Chinatown Beacon Center, Chinatown Child Development Center, Chinatown Community Children's Center, Chinese Newcomers Service Center, Chinatown YMCA, Community Youth Center, Friends of Educational Opportunities in Chinatown, Maintrain, NICOS Chinese Health Coalition, Refugee Transitions, San Francisco State University Vietnamese American Studies Center, Southeast Asian Community Center, Self-Help for the Elderly, Wu Yee Children's Services, YMCA of San Francisco and Marin.
