District Nine Quality of Life Candidate Debate

I attended the District 9 Quality of Life Candidate Debate at the Women's Building Wednesday night. The meeting was sponsored by the Neighborhood Parks Council and Friends of the Urban Forest.
Eva Royale, David Campos, Eric Storey, Thomas Valtin and Eric Quezada all attended. (Mark Sanchez did not attend).
Unlike most debates I have attended, this debate was much more interesting because the questions were more specific and hence the answers were more specific.

Eva Royale pays attention to small details, you can tell when you listen to her. She helped plant and organize 150 trees on 24th Street and she knew all the names of the different kinds of trees that were planted. She would help organize the organization in District Nine to help keep the parks, streets safe and clean.
David Campos He said its the "little things" that are important. "I will walk the district and look around and pay attention". Parks are important to District 9 - it is a place where residents can go and have open space.
Eric Storey knows the district because he has to - he walks his dog. Eric talked about putting more billboards in parks to provide information about the district for the walkers .
Thomas Valtin is a long time employee of the Sierra Club. Believes in community partnership in cleaning up the parks, having community gardens and getting the kids out to the park.
Eric Quezada Eric has worked on the Eastern Neighborhood Plan which addresses the question of parks in District Nine. He would use the resources already setup in the district to look out for District Nine and solve problems.

All agreed that McLaren Park was the most important park in District Nine and should be the first priority. I didn't know there was a golf course in McLaren Park!!! Most of the candidates would rather have more open space for soccer, frisbee , baseball than a golf course.

Board of Supervisors Meeting - Passthrough from landlord to residential tenant ordinance.
When: October 21, 2008 - Tuesday
2 p.m. on
Where: City Hall, San Francisco.
What: On October 1, 2008 the Land Use and Economic Development Committee voted to bring forth legislation proposed by Supervisor Alioto-Pier, Chu, Elsbernd authorizing the passthrough from landlord to residential tenant a percentage of increased water and sewer bill charges after July 1, 2002 to the Board of Supervisors on October 21, 2008. This motion was made with no recommendation from the Land Use and Economic Development Committee (Maxwell, Sandoval and Aaron Peskin). At the meeting amendments to this ordinance (made by the PUC) were made (but not in writing). At the meeting there was strong opposition from Tenants Organization as they consider this a rent increase - on top of the automatic rent increase that is generated ever year.
