Sunday afternoon I went to the 2008 District Three Candidates Housing Forum presented by the Chinatown Coalition for Better Housing held at the Gordon J. Lau Elementary School in Chinatown.
The room was jammed packed to hear candidates David Chiu and Denise McCarthy speak and answer questions about affordable housing, tenant displacement and tenant rights.
Rev. Norman Fong moderated the program. For some reason, no other candidates showed up?
Both David Chiu and Denise McCarthy are very strong on supporting rent control,Yes on B and more open space. David Chiu talked about working to get federal funding and making sure all buildings were safe. Denise McCarthy talked about needing affordable housing to keep diversity in District 3.
Chinatown Coalition for Better Housing is comprised of 7 community based groups (Community Tenants Association, Ping Yuen Residents Improvement Association, Chinatown SRO Collaborative, Asian Law Caucus, Chinatown Presbyterian Church, Adopt-An-Alleyway and Chinatown Community Development Center). CCBH is committed to improving the conditions of the neighborhood by advocating, organizing and educating the community on housing rights issues.
