There was a Civic Celebration of the Life of Del Martin yesterday afternoon at City Hall. Hundreds of people showed up to show their respect for both Del Martin but also Phyllis Lyon and Kendra Mon, Del and Phyllis' daughter.
The celebration started out with an original instrumental piano from Margie Adam, LGBT Color Guard, Sistah Boom and a wonderful "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Ellen Seeling on the flugelhorn (that's when the Kleenex started coming out). Mayor Newsom spoke and everyone gave Phyllis Lyon a standing ovation. Glide Ensemble sang, Reverend Cecil Williams and Jan Mirikitani spoke.
Holly Near sang exquisitely "All That There Is". Aileen Hernandez, Margie Adam, Jewelle Gomez, James Hormel, Mark Leno, Kate Kendell spoke with Linda Tillery accompanied by Tammy Hall performed "Tenderly" . The celebration ended with Ellen Seeling on the trumpet playing Greensleeves and the Glide Ensemble singing Total Praise.
What a great honor it was for San Francisco to have such a pioneer, icon and civil rights advocate to be a resident of San Francisco. The beautiful celebration at City Hall showed San Francisco's thanks.
